Dog blankets in different sizes#ki_sc

What size blanket does my dog need? The size guide for Maltipoo, Goldendoodle & co.

Whether a dainty Maltipoo or a big Goldendoodle: what size blanket does your dog really need? In our guide, you'll learn how to measure your four-legged friend correctly and how the corduroy blanket 'Nest' blends perfectly with your living room.

A cosy retreat is a must for every four-legged friend. Whether on the sofa, in the bedroom or on the back seat of the car: the right dog blanket protects your furniture from dirt and hair, gives your dog a sense of security and fits perfectly into your living room. But what blanket size does your dog really need? Especially with popular breeds such as the Maltipoo, Cavapoo, French Bulldog or larger Doodles, many owners wonder how much lying space their darling needs.

We show you how to measure your dog correctly, which sizes suit compact designer dogs and when the larger blanket is the best choice for a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle.

Measuring your dog correctly: how to find the right blanket size

When choosing a dog blanket, don't rely on body weight alone. What matters is your dog's actual body length and how it likes to lie. With a flexible tape measure, you can determine the dimensions in two quick steps:

  • Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while your dog is standing relaxed or lying stretched out.
  • Add around 15 to 20 centimetres of extra space to this value.

This buffer ensures that the head and paws don't hang over the edge when your dog turns over or stretches out in its sleep. The height from paw to shoulder (withers height) also gives you a good indication of how much width the blanket should offer.

Small designer dogs: the right size for Maltipoo, Cavapoo and Frenchie

Compact dogs and the popular smaller hybrid breeds bring a lot of personality, but don't need a huge blanket landscape on the sofa. For a Maltipoo, Cavapoo, Havapoo or the French Bulldog (Frenchie), a size of 90 × 100 cm is the ideal solution.

Why 90 × 100 cm works perfectly for small breeds

A blanket size of 90 × 100 cm gives smaller dogs enough room to snuggle up without the blanket taking up too much space on smaller sofas or armchairs. Typical breeds for this size are:

  • Maltipoo and Havapoo
  • Cavapoo and Cockapoo (mini version)
  • French Bulldog (Frenchie)
  • Dachshund, Pug and Jack Russell Terrier
  • Beagle and Shiba Inu

Small dogs often deliberately seek contact with a soft border. If the blanket lies on the sofa, the 90 × 100 cm size protects exactly the seat and the backrest your dog leans against.

Medium to large Doodles: why Goldendoodles and Labradoodles appreciate more space

Larger Doodles combine the curly, dense coat of the poodle with the strong build of retrievers. A Goldendoodle, Labradoodle or Australian Doodle has noticeably more shoulder height and body length, depending on the breeding line. For these four-legged friends, go for the 125 × 100 cm size.

Generous lying space with 125 × 100 cm

With a length of 125 cm and a depth of 100 cm, even long-legged dogs have enough room to stretch out all four legs. This size is particularly suitable for:

  • Goldendoodle (standard)
  • Labradoodle and Australian Doodle
  • Golden Retriever and Labrador
  • Australian Shepherd and Border Collie
  • Dalmatian and Rhodesian Ridgeback

With larger dogs, the blanket also has to absorb more weight. So make sure the fabric is robustly woven and doesn't slip straight away when your dog jumps onto its spot with momentum.

The right lying position: does your dog curl up or stretch out?

Besides pure body measurements, the preferred sleeping position plays an important role in choosing the blanket:

The curler (donut sleeper)

Some dogs curl up into a tight ball, tuck their nose under their tail and seek maximum contact with the surface. These dogs often feel secure on a more compact blanket too, as they take up little floor space.

The stretcher (side and belly sleeper)

If your four-legged friend stretches all four legs far out in its sleep or lies flat on its belly, it needs almost twice its normal standing length. If your Doodle or Frenchie belongs to this group, when in doubt always choose the larger version (125 × 100 cm), so that the paws stay on the protected fabric and don't end up on the upholstery.

'Nest' from mokebo: well-thought-out dimensions and soft corduroy

Many simple dog blankets quickly slide off the sofa or offer the dog's head no support. That's why we developed the pet blanket 'Nest', a blanket that combines lying comfort with real furniture protection.

Two sizes for every type of dog

'Nest' is available in exactly the two tried-and-tested sizes:

Cushioned rest for head and neck

The integrated edge cushion serves as a comfortable headrest for your dog. At the same time, the blanket lies protectively over your sofa arm or car seat. Claws and dirt don't even reach the actual cover fabric of your furniture. You'll find more ideas in our 5 tips to protect your sofa from dog hair & scratches.

Practical in everyday life: cover washable at 30 degrees

Mishaps and dirty paws are part of everyday life with a dog. With 'Nest', you simply take the inner cushion out via the zip. You can easily wash the cover made of soft, hard-wearing corduroy fabric at 30 degrees on a gentle cycle. How often and how exactly you should wash your dog's bed is explained in our guide Washing a dog bed – how often & how to do it right?

FAQ on blanket size for dogs

Which blanket size is suitable for a Maltipoo?
For an adult Maltipoo, a blanket size of 90 × 100 cm is quite enough. It offers enough room to turn around and snuggle up and fits perfectly on sofa seats or armchairs.

What size does a Goldendoodle need?
For medium to large Doodles such as the Goldendoodle or Labradoodle, we recommend a size of 125 × 100 cm. That way your dog can stretch out completely on its side without going over the edge.

What do I do if my dog is right between two sizes?
When in doubt, choose the larger version. Dogs appreciate extra room to move, and your furniture benefits from even more generous coverage against pet hair and dirt.

Does the blanket also protect the back of the sofa?
Yes. Blankets with a raised edge or extension like 'Nest' are placed on the sofa so that the cushioned part covers the backrest. This prevents scratch marks and discolouration on the upholstery.

How do I best care for corduroy home accessories when I have a dog?
You can quickly remove pet hair with a soft upholstery nozzle or a rubber brush in the direction of the corduroy pile. If needed, simply wash the covers of 'Nest' and our cushions at 30 degrees on a gentle cycle. You'll find more tips for corduroy furniture in our guide How to clean and care for your corduroy sofa properly.
