Wollteppich vs. waschbarer Teppich: Was hält im Familienalltag wirklich länger?

Wool rug vs. washable rug: which really lasts longer in family life?

You love the elegant look of wool and natural-fibre rugs, but worry about stains in hectic everyday life? In our comparison “Wool rug vs. washable rug”, we show you how to combine beautiful design with uncompromising ease of care: discover how modern mono-material rugs can be cleaned in the washing machine at 40 °C, protect your parquet and, thanks to C2C certification, are also a sustainable alternative.

Wool rug vs. washable rug: which really lasts longer in everyday family life?

We all know the feeling: it's time for a new rug. It should make the living room cosy, radiate warmth and simply look great. For many people, the first thought immediately goes to the classic wool rug. It stands for naturalness, high quality and an elegant look.

But then reality catches up with us: a knocked-over glass of red wine on games night, muddy dog paws after a walk or spilt morning coffee. In real, hectic everyday life, the beloved natural-fibre rug quickly becomes a source of stress.

The good news? You no longer have to choose between a stylish home and a relaxed everyday life. Find out at mokebo why modern, washable indoor rugs are the smart alternative to a wool rug – and how they can easily keep up in terms of looks.

Washable rugs with a natural-fibre look from mokebo

1. The wool rug myth: beautiful to look at, but delicate!

Natural fibres such as wool, cotton or real sisal create a fantastic indoor climate. But they have one decisive catch: they hardly forgive mistakes. Stains penetrate deep into the natural fibre. Anyone who has ever tried to rub beetroot or coffee out of a wool rug knows how quickly the material felts or the colour suffers. The only solution is usually expensive professional rug cleaning.

This is exactly where innovative, washable rugs come in. They are not wool rugs – and that's a good thing! Because they combine the best of both worlds: the truly high-quality look of a real wool rug and the maximum ease of care of a synthetic-fibre rug.

2. Cosiness redefined: an elegant natural-fibre look without the stress

Do you want the look of an elegant natural-fibre rug, but the soft feel and robustness of a modern fibre?

Washable indoor rug 'Loop': This rug gives your rooms perfect definition. Its coarsely woven, nubbly texture looks like an elegant natural-fibre rug with a sisal look, but as a modern indoor rug it gives you a noticeably softer feel underfoot. Ideal for the living room and dining room!

Washable indoor rug 'Barefoot': The name says it all. With its dense, soft pile, this rug adds a warm accent to any living room, bedroom or children's room. Soft, simple, cosy – a rug you'll love to sit on and walk across barefoot.

Both models look like traditional premium rugs, but hide a secret that will revolutionise your everyday life.

3. Carefree through everyday life: washable indoor rugs!

Coffee stains? Hectic family life? No problem. The dirt-repellent material of our washable synthetic-fibre rugs keeps them fresh for a long time. And if a real mishap does happen, they can easily be cleaned in the washing machine at up to 40 °C and are even suitable for the tumble dryer afterwards.

4. Will the rug fit in my washing machine?

This is the question we hear most often. Depending on the model and size (160x230 cm to 240x340 cm), our rugs weigh between 6 and 15 kg.

  • For small to medium sizes (up to approx. 7-8 kg): These fit easily into standard household washing machines with an 8 kg drum capacity.
  • For our XXL rugs (up to 15 kg): Here we recommend a trip to the launderette. The large industrial drums (18-20 kg) wash your large rug perfectly clean for just a few euros. That's still much cheaper, quicker and less stressful than specialist cleaning of a wool rug of the same size!
Tip: Thanks to the dirt-repellent surface texture, a damp cloth is often enough for small everyday stains. Machine washing is only necessary when the rug needs a deep refresh.

5. But what about sustainability?

Many people choose wool rugs because they are looking for a natural and sustainable product. Conventional synthetic rugs rightly have a bad reputation, as they usually consist of various plastics glued together and end up in the rubbish after use.

But we've thought ahead! Our rugs are made with a long-lasting mono-material design ('Barefoot' from 100% polyester, 'Loop' from 100% polypropylene). This is why they are C2C-certified (Cradle to Cradle).

What that means for your peace of mind: after a long life, this sustainable rug doesn't end up in the rubbish. It can be 100 % recycled as a valuable raw material for new products. A circular rug that lasts for years is often more sustainable than a natural-fibre rug that has to be thrown away after the third stubborn stain.

6. Gentle protection: a secure grip for delicate floors

Whether it's expensive parquet, floorboards or smooth tiles – a good rug must not damage the floor. While rough natural-fibre backings (such as jute or untreated wool) often leave micro-scratches on delicate floors, we play it safe.

Our natural-look indoor rugs have a soft, integrated felt backing. This reliably protects your floors from abrasion, makes the rug non-slip and is of course perfectly suited to rooms with underfloor heating.

7. Conclusion: which rug is right for you?

If you're looking for a rug that you rarely walk on and that is more of a pure work of art, wool may be an option.

But if your home is full of life – with children, pets, guests and cosy evenings – then don't make things unnecessarily hard for yourself. With our washable rugs 'Barefoot' and 'Loop', you bring the high-quality look and cosiness of a wool rug into your home, paired with the reassuring certainty: whatever happens, the washing machine will take care of it.

8. FAQ: frequently asked questions about washable rugs vs. wool rugs

Does a washable rug fit in a normal household washing machine?

That depends on the weight, dimensions and stiffness of the rug. As a basic rule: rugs weighing up to approx. 7–8 kg can be washed in standard washing machines (7–8 kg drum capacity).

Depending on size and model, our models 'Barefoot' and 'Loop' weigh between 6 and 15 kg. The smaller and medium sizes fit easily into normal household machines, while for the XXL versions, drums with a capacity of 10 kg or more or launderettes are ideal.

Can you really put washable rugs in the tumble dryer?

Not every washable rug is also suitable for the tumble dryer. Many cheap models have rubberised backings that can become brittle or melt in the heat of the dryer.

Thanks to the high-quality finish with a soft felt backing and heat-resistant materials, however, our indoor rugs are suitable for the tumble dryer without any problems and keep their shape and texture even after drying.

Are synthetic rugs as sustainable as wool rugs?

Classic synthetic-fibre rugs often consist of a mix of plastics and adhesives that are hard to separate, which makes recycling almost impossible.

Thanks to the mono-material design (100 % polyester and 100 % polypropylene respectively), our rugs meet the strict criteria of Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certification. So they are not incinerated or sent to landfill, but can be 100 % reused as raw material at the end of their life cycle.

Do washable rugs offer the same cosy look as natural fibres?

Cheap washable rugs often look as thin as mats and appear artificial.

Modern weaving techniques give the washable mokebo rugs an elegant appearance: 'Loop' offers a coarsely woven texture with an elegant sisal look, while 'Barefoot', with its dense, soft pile, creates a comfortable feel like a classic living room wool rug.

Are washable rugs suitable for parquet and underfloor heating?

Rough rug backings or unsuitable anti-slip coatings can scratch parquet floors or cause discolouration due to plasticisers.

The underside of our rugs has a soft felt coating. This reliably protects delicate parquet from scratches, lies non-slip on smooth tiles and ensures optimal heat transfer with underfloor heating.
